history
The Sibelius Academy library was founded in 1885 as part of the
Helsinki Music Institute. In 1924 the Institute was renamed the
Helsinki Conservatory and in 1939 the Sibelius Academy. The Helsinki
Conservatory, as it was then, moved into a new building of its own at
Pohjoinen Rautatienkatu 9 in 1931.
At that time the library was taken care of by the composer Helvi
Leiviskä, pianist Matti Rautio , who was in charge of cataloguing the
library´s materials, and composer Seppo Nummi.
In 1980 the Sibelius Academy became a government institution and the
library expanded to serve the whole country.
